A school counselor recommended Mia for the Big Brothers Big Sisters program because she was being bullied at school. Her grades were dropping and she was participating less often in class discussions. Mia's mom said that Mia was always sad after school and never smiled.

On the day we matched her with her Big Sister Sonia, a local reporter asked, "Are you going to go back to class and tell your friends about your new Big Sister?" Mia was coloring with her new Big Sister, getting acquainted. She never looked up...but hesitated just a moment before saying, "Well, I don't really have any friends."

Sonia changed all that. She became Mia's friend and supporter. About six months after being matched, Mia's teacher reported that Mia was happier, her grades had improved and she was again beginning to join in on discussions. Mia's mom said the first time she'd seen Mia smile when talking about school was the day she met Sonia.
